Change the Settings of the Wireless Router

Note

  • Connecting to the wireless router and changing the settings are required. If you do not understand the settings of the wireless router, inquire with the help desk or ask somebody capable of changing the settings of the wireless router to perform the work.
  1. Step 1 Check the encryption method.

Connecting is possible when the wireless encryption method of the wireless router is compatible with the printer. If it is not compatible, even if a manual connection search is performed, the wireless router will not be displayed on the printer screen and connecting will also not be possible. In addition, Easy wireless connect, connecting by WPS button, and connecting by PIN input will also fail.

Check the encryption method, SSID, and encryption key of the computer/smartphone/tablet you want to connect and the currently connected wireless router. See here for the check procedure. Check whether connecting with the confirmed encryption is possible in the list below.

    Note

    • Use without encryption is possible but is not recommended for security reasons.

The encryption methods that can be used with printers released in 2024 are listed below (may be different for some models).

In the list below, the encryption level increases in the direction of bottom to top.

    Arrow
    • WPA3 or WPA3-Personal

    • WPA2-PSK/ WPA3 or WPA2-Personal/ WPA3-Personal

    • WPA2-PSK (AES)

    • WPA2-PSK or WPA2-Personal

    • WPA-PSK/ WPA2-PSK or WPA-Personal/ WPA2-Personal

    • WPA-PSK (AES)

    • WPA-PSK or WPA-Personal

Connecting with the following encryption methods may not be possible with printers released in 2024. If connecting is not possible, change the encryption method to one of the above.

In the list below, the encryption level increases in the direction of bottom to top.

    Arrow
    • WPA3-Enterprise

    • WAP2-PSK-Enterprise

    • WPA-Enterprise

    • WPA-PSK (TKIP)/ WPA2-PSK (TKIP)

    • WPA2-PSK (TKIP)

    • WPA-PSK (TKIP)

    • WEP

In cases where TKIP or AES are not displayed when the encryption method is WPA, WPA2, or WPA/WPA2, they can almost always both be used. AES is set automatically on the printer.

    Note

    • Consumer printers do not support WPA-Enterprise/WPA2-Enterprise/WPA3-Enterprise.

When the printer can be connected, the Select Wireless Router screen of Manual Connection is displayed.

Select Wireless Router screen for manual connection

If it is displayed, use the checked encryption key as is, and connect manually.

If it is not displayed, connecting may be possible by directly entering the SSID.

Direct input is at the very bottom of the Select Wireless Router screen, which is accessed by scrolling down.

If the encryption method is not in the list of encryption methods that can be used, change the encryption method to one that is in the list and that is compatible with the wireless router.

    Note

    • If the settings of the wireless router have been changed, also reconnect the other devices connected to the same wireless router.

Connect the printer according to the encryption set on the wireless router. If the encryption has been changed, with the exception of WPA3, connection by WPS button may now be possible. If connection by WPS button is not possible, connect manually.

  2. Step 2 Turn off the privacy separator function.

If the wireless router has the privacy separator function turned on, the printer cannot print even if it is connected to the wireless router. A mobile wireless router has this function turned on, so be sure to turn it off when using your printer.

  3. Step 3 Turn off MAC address filtering

If MAC address filtering of the wireless router is turned on, add the MAC address of the printer. Or, set MAC address filtering to off.

  4. Step 4 When using a mesh wireless router

If the SSID of 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz is the same when using a mesh wireless router (including when using the band steering function), printing may not be possible even when connected to the wireless router.

Check method: Check whether multiple routers with the same SSID are detected in manual connection.

Solution: Turn off the band steering function so that there will be separate SSIDs, one for 5 GHz and one for 2.4 GHz. If the same SSID is used with 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz even though there is no band steering function, set different SSID. Connect both the computer and printer to the wireless router in the that state. If the problem persists, change the settings so that the computer connects to the SSID to which the printer is connected.
