Connecting Smartphone/Tablet to Printer Directly via Wireless LAN (Direct Connection)

You can connect devices (e.g. smartphone, or tablet) to the printer by two methods below.

  • Wireless connection (connecting devices via a wireless router)
  • Direct wireless connection (connecting devices using wireless direct)

This section describes wireless direct, which allows you to print by connecting the devices to the printer directly.

Follow the procedure below to use wireless direct.

  1. Enable wireless direct.

  2. Connect devices to printer.

This section also describes changing wireless direct to wireless LAN.

Important

  • The administrator password is required to change settings if it is enabled for changing settings using the operation panel.
  • If a device has already been connected to the printer via wireless LAN and you want to add a device to connect, connect it to the printer directly. You can connect up to 5 devices to the printer at the same time.
  • Check the usage restrictions and switch the printer to the wireless direct.

Preparing for Connection

Change settings below to prepare for wireless direct.

Changing Printer Setting

  1. Make sure printer is turned on.

  2. Flick HOME screen and tap LAN settings.

  3. Tap Change LAN.

  4. Tap Activate direct connect..

  5. Tap Yes.

    The identifier (SSID) for wireless direct appears.

    The device detects the printer by the identifier (SSID).

    Note

    • If you tap Details and tap Yes, the following items appear.

      • Security setting
      • Password
      • Printer's name which appears on a Wi-Fi Direct compatible device

      The password is required when connecting a device to the printer. Depending on the device you are using, no password is required.

      When you connect a Wi-Fi Direct compatible device to the printer, select the device name displayed on the touch screen from your device.

    • The identifier (SSID) and the security setting are specified automatically. To update them, see below.

  6. Tap OK.

    The wireless direct is enabled and a device can be connected to the printer wirelessly.

Connecting Smartphone/Tablet to Printer

  1. Turn on wireless communication on your device.

    Enable "Wi-Fi" on your device's "Setting" menu.

    For more on turning on wireless communication, see your device's instruction manual.

  2. Select "DIRECT-XXXX-TX-4000" ("X" represents alphanumeric characters) from list displayed on device.

    Note

    • If "DIRECT-XXXX-TX-4000" does not appear on the list, wireless direct is not enabled.

      See Changing Printer Setting to enable wireless direct.

  3. Enter password.

    Your device is connected to the printer.

    Note

    • Check the password for the wireless direct.

      Check by one of the following methods.

    • Depending on the device you are using, entering the password is required to connect a device to the printer via wireless LAN. Enter the password specified for the printer.

    • If your Wi-Fi Direct compatible device is set to prioritize using Wi-Fi Direct and it is connecting to the printer, the printer displays a confirmation screen asking if you allow the device to connect to the printer.

      Make sure the name on the touch screen is the same as that of your wireless communication device and tap Yes.

Changing Printer Setting to Use Wireless LAN

Follow the procedure below to change the printer setting to use wireless LAN.

  1. Flick HOME screen and tap LAN settings.

  2. Tap Change LAN.

  3. Tap Activate wireless LAN.

    If you do not use the printer over wireless LAN, select Activate wired LAN or Disable LAN.

Changing Direct Connection Setting

Change the settings for the wireless direct following the procedure below.

  1. Make sure printer is turned on.

  2. Flick HOME screen and tap LAN settings.

  3. Tap LAN settings.

  4. Tap Other settings.

  5. Tap Wireless Direct settings.

  6. Change settings as necessary.

    • To update the identifier (SSID) and the password for wireless direct

      Tap A to display the confirmation screen. To update the identifier (SSID) and the password, tap Yes.

      To check the security setting and the updated password, tap Details and tap Yes on the screen displayed next.

    • To change the printer's name displayed on the Wi-Fi Direct compatible device

      Tap B to display the printer's name (device name) displayed on a Wi-Fi Direct compatible device.

      Follow the procedure below to change the name.

      1. Tap touch screen.

      2. Enter device name (up to 32 characters).

      3. Tap OK to finish entering device name.

      4. Tap OK to finish specifying device name.

    • To change the confirmation screen setting when a Wi-Fi Direct compatible device is connecting to the printer

      Tap C to display the confirmation screen. If you want the printer to display the screen to inform you a Wi-Fi direct compatible device is connecting to the printer, tap Yes.

      Important

      • To prevent an unauthorized access, we recommend you should not change the setting from the default.

    When you finished performing the settings, the printer returns to the Wireless Direct settings screen.

  7. Touch HOME button.

    The HOME screen appears.

Note

  • If you change the wireless direct setting of the printer, also change the wireless router setting of the device.
