Message Appears
This section describes some of the errors and messages that may appear.

A support code (error number) is displayed on the computer or on the touch screen for some errors. For details on errors that have support code, see List of Support Code for Error.

Message Appears on Touch Screen
Check the message and take an appropriate action.

Data of supported types are not saved.
-
There is no image data or document saved on the memory card that can be read by this machine.
-
The machine may not recognize the file if the file name or folder path contain certain characters. Use only alphanumeric characters.
-
Photo data edited or processed on a computer must be printed from the computer.

When a photo which has been processed on a computer is selected, "?" is displayed on the touch screen.
-
-
Cannot print the specified PDF file. An error has occurred while scanning the file, or the format is not supported, or the file is too large.
-
Make sure the PDF file is printable from a memory card. For more information, see Printing Documents (PDF File) Saved on Memory Card.
Note
-
The names of the PDF files are displayed even though they cannot be printed from the memory card. We recommend that you check whether they are printable. If one of the following conditions applies to the PDF files, they are not printable.
-
The Details screen is not displayed for the PDF file you want to print.
-
Characters other than machine name, IJ Scan Utility, or My Image Garden are displayed on Created with on the Details screen.
-
"?" is displayed on the preview screen.
-
-
-
Data edited or processed on a computer must be printed from the computer.
-
-
The specified PDF file contains unprintable data. Some portions may not be printed.
PDF file which contain lot of graphics or hi-resolution images may lose that data or stop before printing is completed. In this case, print from the computer.
-
The card is currently writable from PC. Set to [Not writable from PC].
The card slot is set to Writable from USB PC.
You cannot print from the memory card when the card slot is set to Writable from USB PC. After writing on the memory card, select Not writable from PC in Read/write attribute under Device user settings.
-
Power was not turned off correctly the last time. Press the button when turning power off.
The machine may have been unplugged while the power was still on.
Tap OK on the touch screen.

Cannot connect to the server. Please wait a while and try again.
The machine cannot connect to the server due to a communication error.
Tap OK on the touch screen and try again after a while.
Error Regarding Automatic Duplex Printing Is Displayed

Check See Automatic Duplex Printing Problems and take the appropriate action.
Error Regarding Power Cord Being Unplugged Is Displayed (Windows)
The machine may have been unplugged while it was on.
Check the error message that appears on the computer and click OK.
The machine starts printing.
See Notice for Unplugging the Power Cord to unplug the machine correctly.
Writing Error/Output Error/Communication Error (Windows)

Check1 If the POWER lamp is off, make sure machine is plugged in and turn it on.
If POWER lamp flashes while the machine is initializing. Wait until the POWER lamp stops flashing and remains lit.

Check2 Make sure correct printer port is set in printer driver.
* In the following instructions, "XXX" signifies your machine's name.
-
Log in using an account with administrator privileges.
-
Make the following settings.
-
In Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, select Control Panel from Settings charm on Desktop > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.
-
In Windows 7, select Devices and Printers from Start menu.
-
In Windows Vista, select Start menu > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Printers.
-
In Windows XP, select Start menu > Control Panel > Printers and Other Hardware > Printers and Faxes.
-
-
Open printer driver properties.
-
In Windows 8.1, Windows 8, or Windows 7, right-click "Canon XXX series Printer" icon (where "XXX" is your machine's name), and then select Printer properties.
-
In Windows Vista or Windows XP, right-click "Canon XXX series Printer" icon (where "XXX" is your machine's name), and then select Properties.
-
-
Click Ports tab to check port settings.
Make sure that a port named "USBnnn" (where "n" is a number) with "Canon XXX series Printer" appearing in Printer column is selected for Print to the following port(s).
Note

When the machine is used over LAN, the port name of the machine is displayed as "CNBJNP_xxxxxxxxxx". "xxxxxxxxxx" is the character string generated from the MAC address or a character string specified by the user when setting up the machine.
-
If setting is incorrect:
Reinstall the MP Drivers from the Setup CD-ROM or the Canon website.
-
Printing does not start even though the machine is connected to the computer using a USB cable and the port named "USBnnn" is selected:
In Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, select My Printer on Start screen to start My Printer. If My Printer is not displayed on Start screen, select Search charm, and then search for "My Printer".
Set the correct printer port on Diagnose and Repair Printer. Follow the on-screen instructions to set the correct printer port, and then select your machine's name.
In Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP, click Start and select All programs, Canon Utilities, Canon My Printer, Canon My Printer, and then select Diagnose and Repair Printer. Follow the on-screen instructions to set the correct printer port, and then select your machine's name.
If the problem is not resolved, reinstall the MP Drivers from the Setup CD-ROM or the Canon website.

Printing does not start even though the port named "CNBJNP_xxxxxxxxxx" is selected when the machine is used over LAN:
Launch IJ Network Tool, select "CNBJNP_xxxxxxxxxx" as you checked in step 4, and then associate the port with the printer using Associate Port in Settings menu.
If the problem is not resolved, reinstall the MP Drivers from the Setup CD-ROM or the Canon website.

Check3 Make sure machine is properly connected to computer.
If you are using a USB cable, make sure it is securely connected to both the machine and the computer. When the USB cable is securely plugged in, check the following:
-
If you are using a relay device such as a USB hub, disconnect it, connect the machine directly to the computer, and retry the printing. If printing starts normally, there is a problem with the relay device. Contact the vendor of the relay device.
-
There could also be a problem with the USB cable. Replace the USB cable and retry the printing.
If you use the machine over a LAN, make sure the machine is connected to the network with a LAN cable or is correctly set up for network use.
-

Check4 Make sure MP Drivers are installed correctly.
Uninstall the MP Drivers following the procedure described in Deleting the Unnecessary MP Drivers and reinstall them from the Setup CD-ROM or the Canon website.
-
Check5 When machine is connected to your computer with a USB cable, check device status from your computer.
Follow the procedure below to check the device status.
-
Open the Device Manager on your computer as shown below.
If User Account Control screen is displayed, follow the on-screen instructions.
-
In Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, select Control Panel from Settings charm on Desktop > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager.
-
In Windows 7 or Windows Vista, click Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, and Device Manager.
-
In Windows XP, click Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, System, and Device Manager on Hardware sheet.
-
-
Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers and USB Printing Support.
If USB Printing Support Properties screen does not appear, make sure the machine is correctly connected to the computer.
-
Click General tab and check for a device problem.
If a device error is shown, see Windows Help to resolve it.

Other Error Messages (Windows)
-
Check If an error message appears outside printer status monitor, check the following:
-
"Could not spool successfully due to insufficient disk space"
Delete any unnecessary files to increase the amount of free space on the disk.
-
"Could not spool successfully due to insufficient memory"
Close other applications to increase the available memory.
If you still cannot print, restart your computer and retry the printing.
-
"Printer driver could not be found"
Uninstall the MP Drivers following the procedure described in Deleting the Unnecessary MP Drivers and reinstall them from the Setup CD-ROM or the Canon website.
-
"Could not print Application name - File name"
Try printing again once the current job is complete.

Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program Screen Is Displayed (Windows)
If the Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program is installed, a screen appears asking for permission to send the machine and application usage information every month for about ten years.
Read the information on the screen and follow the instructions below.
-
If you agree to participate in survey program:
Click Agree and follow the on-screen instructions. The printer usage information is sent via the Internet. Once you have completed the procedure, the information is subsequently sent automatically and the confirmation screen does not reappear.

When the information is being sent, a warning such as an Internet security message may appear. Make sure the program name is "IJPLMUI.exe" and allow it.
-
If you clear Send automatically from the next time check box, the information will not be sent automatically from next time and a confirmation screen will appear at the time of the next survey. To send the information automatically, see Changing confirmation screen setting:.

If you do not agree to participate in survey program:
Click Do not agree. The confirmation screen closes and the survey is skipped. The confirmation screen will reappear one month later.

To uninstall Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program:
To uninstall the Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program, click Uninstall and follow the on-screen instructions.

Changing confirmation screen setting:
-
Make the following settings.
-
In Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, select Control Panel from Settings charm on Desktop > Programs > Programs and Features.
-
In Windows 7, or Windows Vista, select Start menu > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
-
In Windows XP, select Start menu > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.

In Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista, a confirmation/warning dialog box may appear when installing, uninstalling or starting up software.
This dialog box appears when administrative rights are required to perform a task.
If you are logged in on an account with administrator privileges, follow the on-screen instructions.

Select Canon Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program.
-
Select Change.
If you select Yes after you have followed the on-screen instructions, the confirmation screen will appear at the time of the next survey.
If you select No, the information will be sent automatically.

If you select Uninstall (or Remove in Windows XP), the Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program is uninstalled. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program Icon Appears (Mac OS)
If the Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program is installed, the printer and application software usage information is sent every month for about ten years. The Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program icon appears in the Dock when it is time to send the printer usage information.
Click the icon, read the information that appears, and then follow the instructions below.

To uninstall Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program:

Stop Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program.
-
Select Applications from Go menu of Finder, double-click the Canon Utilities folder and Inkjet Extended Survey Program folder.
-
Move Canon Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program.app to Trash.
-
Restart computer.
Empty Trash and restart your computer.
-
-
Changing setting:
To display the confirmation screen every time the printer usage information is sent or to resume surveying, follow the procedure below.
-
Select Applications from Go menu of Finder, double-click the Canon Utilities folder and Inkjet Extended Survey Program folder.
-
Double-click Canon Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program icon.
-
Do not display the confirmation screen when information is sent:
If the check box is selected, the information will be sent automatically.
If the check box is not selected, Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program icon will appear in the Dock at the time of the next survey. Click the icon and follow the on-screen instructions.

Turn off/Turn on button:
Click the Turn off button to stop the Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program.
Click the Turn on button to restart the Inkjet Printer/Scanner/Fax Extended Survey Program.
