This paper reference guide describes the types of paper printable with Canon imagePROGRAF iPF8400SE. Before using the printer and paper, read through this guide, the instruction manual supplied with the paper and the printer's User Manual for use in optimal conditions. Paper with Canon written in the "Company name" field is genuine Canon paper. Paper with any other name written in the "Company name" field is Canon feed certified paper. Canon feed confirmed paper is paper for which Canon performed a standardized evaluation and confirmed paper feeding on iPF8400SE. However, Canon does not guarantee that product and quality. Back to contents Settings Category Specifies the paper category of the paper selected in [Media Type] in the [Printer Driver]. Printer Driver Specifies the media type of the paper selected in [Media Type] in the [Printer Driver]. Control Panel Shows the paper types selected in Roll Media Type and Cut Sheet Type, the options set on the control panel. Initial display status Specifies the [Printer Driver] settings, [Control Panel] settings, and [Displayed ICC Profile Name] initial display status. If the Media Configuration Tool is not installed, only the [WW] settings are displayed in the printer driver. If the Media Configuration Tool is installed and has been applied, settings are registered in the printer and printer driver separately for each region. The initial display status of the following items varies depending on the usage region selected when the Media Configuration Tool was installed. Printer Driver Control Panel Displayed ICC Profile Name When the printer driver is installed from the [User Software CD-ROM], [Media Configuration Tool] is also installed. Code Initially displayed in the following regions. Installation methods WW Initially displayed in all usage regions. Printer Driver Media Configuration Tool JP Initially displayed when [Japan] is selected. - Media Configuration Tool AO Initially displayed when [Asia] or [Oceania] is selected. - Media Configuration Tool EU Initially displayed when [EU] is selected. - Media Configuration Tool AM Initially displayed when [North or South America] is selected. - Media Configuration Tool ICC Profile Displays whether or not there is an [ICC Profile] for the paper settings. [ICC Profile] is enabled if the media type corresponding to that ICC profile is displayed in the "Media Type" in the [Main] sheet in the [Printer Driver]. You can switch between displaying and not displaying media types using the "Media Configuration Tool". ICC Profile List Back to contents Paper Product name The product name of the paper. Company name The paper distributor. Region Specifies the region of the paper. Code Paper for the following region. WW Worldwide JP Japan AO Asia, Oceania EU EU, Africa AM North America, Central America, South America Paper is not guaranteed to be sold in all localities within a region. Back to contents Restriction items Recommended Environment Specifies the range of temperature and humidity where the paper can be used. The following problems may occur when used outside of the recommended environment. Print within the range of the recommended usage environment. <Low Humidity Environment> Curls and wrinkles occur in the paper The paper and printhead come into contact easily, and may scratch the print surface or damage the printhead Cut printed material sticks to the printer and does not drop down (film paper) Paper becomes stuck to the printer and does not feed properly, or might not eject properly (film paper) Printing variations occur (film paper) <High Humidity Environment> Printed material does not dry There is severe waviness (undulations) in the paper surface Unable to cut cleanly (cloth paper) Margins remain in borderless printing Print under a humidity of 60% or lower. Edge Precut Paper Removal Required is indicated for paper for which you must remove scraps produced when the leading edge is cut. nting. Remove these scraps from the platen or output stacker before printing. Media Take-up Unit Indicates that the media take-up unit cannot be used. The width of roll paper that can be used with the Media Take-up Unit is 431.8 mm (17 inches) or more. Even if this item is marked as "Yes", the Media Take-up Unit cannot be used if the width of the roll paper is less than 431.8 mm (17 inches). If you cannot retract stiff paper well using Weight Flange 1 or if the diameter of the retracted paper is wider than the Rewind Spool, use Weight Flange 2. For details on this operation, refer to the product manual of the printer. Back to contents Printer operating specifications(Items common to roll paper and cut sheets) Black Ink Shows the black ink types used. If Paper Cannot be Selected If the type of paper loaded cannot be selected on the control panel or in the printer driver, try specifying it as Special 1, Special 2, and so on. Note that higher numbers in this setting enable more vivid colors but may also cause colors to run together. If the fixity of Matte Black Ink is bad when you are using a Media Type that specifies MBK for Black Ink Matte Black Ink may peel off by rubbing when you are using some Media Types whose Product Specifications specify MBK for Black Ink. In such a case, try specifying Special 1 to Special 5 for Media Type on the Control Panel and in the Printer Driver. Note that higher numbers in this setting produce more vivid colors but may also cause colors to run. Back to contents Printer operating specifications(Items exclusive to roll paper) Ink Drying Time Shows the ink drying time when using the cutter. Set the printer's ink drying time according to this table. Borderless Printing Shows whether borderless printing is possible. Borderless printing is not possible with sheets. Paper you can use for borderless printing is restricted to particular types of paper and rolls of particular widths. Paper incompatible with the printer's auto cut function can be printed without borders on the left and right sides only. When CutDustReduct. is set to On, print without borders only on the left and right sides. When borderless printing is used, the edge of the paper is cut during printing. Thus, ink density may be slightly uneven at the edges. If you require higher image quality, specify No in Auto Cut in the printer driver. In this case, the paper can be printed without borders on the left and right sides only. Cut the printed document ejected from the printer, then use scissors to cut away the edges on the top and bottom. When you are using paper that takes longer for ink to adhere for borderless printing and the Cutter Unit touches printing surfaces that are not dry yet, it may damage the paper or the edge of the document that is cut, depending on frequency of use. In this case, follow these steps to change the ink drying time. For details on this operation, refer to the product manual of the printer. Auto Cutting Shows the method of paper cutting. Automatic Auto Cutting is labeled "Yes". The roll is automatically cut by the Cutter Unit following printer driver settings. Eject Cut Ink takes longer to dry on paper for which Auto Cutting is labeled "Eject cut". If you use automatic cutting after printing and the document drops, ink may rub off the printed surface. Support the document after printing as you wait for the printer to cut it. To cut the roll with the Cutter Unit, press the Cut button. User Cut Choose this setting when using media that cannot be cut using the Cutter Unit. Use scissors to cut each document from the roll after printing. For continuous printing (if you will cut each page later), select Auto Cut >Yes or select Print Cut Guideline. For details on this operation, refer to the product manual of the printer. Edge Precut Length Indicates the edge precut length for roll paper. When loading paper Paper is cut if you have selected On (Preset Len) for Trim Edge First in the Printer menu when loading paper. If you have selected Automatic for Trim Edge First, the printer will determine the state of the leading edge and cut the paper automatically as needed. Automatic is the default setting for most types of paper. Back to contents Precautions Back to contents Warnings common to all paper Handling paper Paper may shrink or expand such as due to changes in humidity. Allow the paper to fully acclimatize to the environment where it is being used before using it. Avoid using in an environment that is exposed to water. All paper should be handled carefully to avoid scuffing or scratching the paper. It is recommended that you wear gloves. Handle paper to avoid sweat and oils from your hands becoming adhered to the printed surface. These may cause degradation of printing quality. After printing, ensure the ink is fully dry before handling. Furthermore, while the ink is drying it is recommended that you dry the paper separately without overlapping. After printing, handle the paper gently and avoid touching the front of the printed surface. Because of the characteristics of pigment-based inks, the ink may peel if scuffed or hooked. If the environment is forecast to change after use, remove from the printer and store placed in a bag. Ejected paper Since ejected paper may block the output of or scratch the following paper depending on the situation, ejected paper should be removed one sheet at a time. For details on this operation, refer to the product manual of the printer. Back to contents Handling roll paper Handling roll paper Using roll paper where the trailing edge of the paper does not detach from the paper roll When printing on roll paper that is not Canon genuine paper or Canon feed confirmed paper, the rear edge of the paper may not separate from the paper core if you use the roll paper until the rear edge, resulting in a paper feed failure. It is recommended that you check the specifications with the paper manufacturer before purchasing the paper. When loading roll paper If the leading edge of the roll paper is not aligned, or has dirt or tape marks it may cause misfeeds. If the leading edge of the roll paper is curled, remove the curl before loading. When using roll paper with severe curl If you print using roll paper where the leading edge is severely curled, the print surface may become dirty. Remove the curl before using. If you cannot remove the curl, use the paper advance function in the [Control Panel] to advance the leading edge of the paper until it projects out from the [Top Cover] before printing. Textile - - Cut off any frays neatly from the edge with scissors or similar instrument. If the edge is frayed, the fibers may become wrapping around internal parts of the printer causing malfunctions. Sign/CAD Paper Synthetic Paper Adhesive Synthetic Paper - When placing importance on print quality, we recommend that you select "Eject Cut". Sign/CAD Paper Canon Backlit Film HG Canon Durable Backlit Film Backlit Film HG Durable Backlit Film Set Print Quality to Standard or High in the printer driver. If variations are visible in the printed material, this can be mitigated by aligning the backlight. In environments that are exposed to water, perform the appropriate processing after printing such as laminating before using. Sign/CAD Paper Backprint Film Back Print Backlit Film Set Print Quality to Standard or High in the printer driver. If variations are visible in the printed material, this can be mitigated by aligning the backlight. Sign/CAD Paper CAD Clear Film - If you are using automatic detection of the remaining roll paper with CAD Clear Film, before printing, manually cut the portion of the film that includes the media name or other text. Coated Paper Heavyweight Coated Paper Heavyweight Coated Paper This is coated paper that uses thick paper as the base. This is able to vibrantly print full color images focusing on graphics. This has a variety of applications including store front POP and presentation material. Photo Paper Glossy Photo Paper - Suitable when you want to give a high quality finish to photographic images with a glossy feeling like the print paper used with silver halide photographs. Because it has been processed with a resin coating, it maintains a flat finish without becoming wavy due to absorbing ink. Photo Paper Glossy Photo Paper Glossy Photo Paper HG 170 Suitable when you want to give a high quality finish to photographic images with a glossy feeling like the print paper used with silver halide photographs. This is high cost-performance glossy paper that delivers high image quality at lower cost than conventional glossy paper. Available in a thin type and a thick type that is closer to silver halide photographs. Photo Paper Glossy Photo Paper Glossy Photo Paper HG 255 Suitable when you want to give a high quality finish to photographic images with a glossy feeling like the print paper used with silver halide photographs. Furthermore, because it has been processed with a resin coating (RC), it maintains a flat finish without becoming wavy due to absorbing ink. This is a thick type similar to silver halide photographs.
